St. Anne’s is an active, monthly participant in serving meals at the Iowa Homeless Youth Outreach Center (701 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA). On average, we help to serve 150 to 250 to homeless and near homeless individuals and families. Our scheduled time of service is the last Sunday of every month. The 2013 schedule is available by clicking HERE.
The main meals are prepared by a volunteer caterer for the months of October through March. During April through September, members of St. Anne’s church prepare the main meals. For all meals, members of St. Anne’s prepare or arrange for bread, salads, desserts, and drinks.
Volunteers are needed each month to prepare parts of the meal, purchase needed items, serve food, socialize with the guests and clean up during and after the meal.
Four special meals are served during the year:
- In July we host a cookout where we grill hamburgers, brats, and hot dogs outdoors. In addition, we serve fresh corn, and other picnic foods. We generally serve nearly 500 servings of meat.
- In November, we serve about 300 traditional Thanksgiving meals, generally the Sunday before the holiday.
- In December, we serve about 300 special Christmas meals, usually on the Sunday before Christmas.
- In December, a few people work together to prepare and serve a meal for a Thursday Christmas Party for young people and their families who participate in services offered by the IHYC Outreach program. Santa (from St. Anne’s) attends the Sunday and Thursday Christmas Dinners.
People can become involved in the meal program by contacting the St. Anne’s office or Mary Oliver via email at email@example.com or via phone at 964-1227.
