And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large. (Mark 16: 3-4)
Mark’s Easter story featured a big rock. “Who shall roll away the stone for us?” The rock blocked the entrance to the tomb, denying access to Jesus. It was a symbol of death’s final assault, for it shuts off all light and all hope. It was there as a witness to the permanence and finality of death.
Unmovable. “Who shall roll away the stone for us?”
That Easter morning, the rock that is a witness to the power of death became the anchor of their faith. It became a witness to God’s story of life after death.
No rock can separate us from the love of God in Christ. No rock can hold the Christ from us. The rock, very large, has already been rolled away. The horrible rock of death is now but a trophy of Christ’s victory. The LORD lives! Blessed be our Rock, and exalted be the God of our salvation! (Psalm 18:46)
As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, we are reminded of our greatest source of hope, which is God’s ability to reverse the irreversible, to bring life from death. While some events in life are bigger than we can fully comprehend, the Easter message to us is that we no longer need to be paralyzed by fear. God can transform awful realities into awesome opportunities.
“May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord cause his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and grant you peace.” Numbers 6:24
